Shades/Blinds with challenging windows

Hey guys - I’m curious on what kind of shades you would get with these windows. There are a few challenges with these: (a) most of the windows will have furniture in front of them and have larger sills so drapes won’t really work (b) was initially thinking of doing roman shades inside the window frames however, I’m concerned they will affect the operation of the windows BUT (c) if I do outside mount, it won’t work on this window (build in bookshelf cuts into the window casing) or the one by the door (casing is right up against door casing) - I’d love to hear any possible solutions and/or what you think is the best compromise.

Hey @kateseymour! For tricky windows like this where curtains won’t work, I’ve always defaulted to using honeycomb (also called cellular) shades. They are not exactly a design statement, but they do the job and blend in pretty well if you match the color to your trim or wall paint.

I am a fan of the light filtering versions, but they also come in blackout. I have both manual operation ones from Select Blinds (these: https://www.selectblinds.com/cellular-shades/cordless-top-down-bottom-up-light-filtering-shades.html, the bottom up functionality is pretty nifty, especially for ground floor rooms for privacy) and more lux remote-controlled battery powered ones on timers from Lutron / Serena (these: https://www.serenashades.com/).

Thanks, I think I would go for romans in this instance, just worried that with the way the window operates, I won’t be able to do an inside mount. Don’t think I can match the cellulars to this room, it’s going to be a very dark blue Spoak

Working with difficult windows requires both the right product and proper measurements. Here are solutions we often recommend in the Irvine area:

  • Bay/Bow Windows: Individual blinds or shades for each section maintain functionality
  • Arched/Curved Windows: Custom-shaped shades preserve the architectural beauty
  • Oversized Windows: Extra-wide roller shades or panel tracks provide full coverage

For challenging window coverings in Irvine, CA, the key is finding a provider who offers:
✓ Precise custom measurements
✓ Specialty hardware for unique shapes
✓ Local professional installation

Many homeowners here opt for professional measuring services to ensure perfect fitment - especially with our coastal climate affecting materials over time.

i know this post is older so this response won’t help you at all. its hard to figure out what would work without trial and error lol. im curious to know what you ended up doing. when i read this i originally thought of the resurgence of the cafe curtain. especially since these windows do seem farmhouse/southern-esque. I know the cafe curtains are usually mounted on the inside of the window frame but wondering if you could mount something on the outside of the frame or beyond the frame to give them width too. then the client could have light and open them on occasion when they wanted the whole window exposed. they make such cute patterns too.

I made another post with what we went with  Good source for shades & blinds
