Hello! We are renovating a 1929 home in Charleston, SC, and the master bathroom will lead into the master closet. Should we carry the tile from the bathroom into the closet or lay hardwoods in the master closet?
oooh! how much of the floor can you see in the closet? is it a walk-in?
generally i think bringing the tile in will make it all feel like one big suite that includes both bath and dressing room, and not bringing the tile in makes it feel like two distinct spaces. do you have a point of view on which you want? i think if the closet is on the smaller side, keeping it tiled actually packs a punch and serves to make your bathroom feel bigger and more luxurious (like it’s an attached closet to the bathroom). if it’s a large walk in, i’d probably lay hardwoods so it feels like yet another room that you can optimize for what you’d want when you’re dressing: plushy rug, complementary coloring for your skintone, …
Hi cecily! This, I think is all about personal design choices. I personally love the whole house to be the same flooring material. I just sometimes feel like when there are too many designs, textures, and colors it feels disjointed or almost jarring when you experience a new “feel” in every single room. I personally like to feel an entire house transitions well and is cohesive. So I would vote to put the tile into closet and use nice rugs in the closet to soften the hard material. Orrrrr you could put hardwood in the bathroom and also in the closet and again use rugs when able. However if this still doesn’t jive with your style here are some tile to wood transitions that look nice. I think it’s more about the execution of the transition that makes material changes successful.
